INDEXING THE 1940 CENSUS

FamilySearch, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been indexing the census as quickly as possible.  You can view the progress by clicking on this link and waiting until the flag colors change to individual states.

The church also sponsors a site where all census records are free as soon as they are indexed as well as a lot of other records.  Type familysearch.org into your Internet browser box, and click on Enter or Go.  The default is "Records," and this is a free search engine. Put your ancestor's name in the template and any information about birth or death date or marriage and locations.  You can also add a spouse.  Add this additional information by clicking on any of those words under the name box.  Then SEARCH.  The website will bring up any persons who match your request.  This could be census, death indexes, SSDI, or any other records that have been uploaded to this site.  Try the BOOKS button at the top to see what books are available digitally on this site on your ancestor.  Click on TREES to find the old Ancestral File and Pedigree Resource File. Search CATALOG to find anything listed on your ancestor in the Salt Lake City Family History Library.

To sign in, establish an LDS Account (or for the public a FamilySearch Account) at the upper right-hand corner Sign In, and then you will be able to view any original records that are indicated on your person's record, like the census.  The use of this site is free, and it will not be too long until another button called Family Tree will appear on this site when you sign in.  It is the repository for all family history records preserved by the church, and it will be replacing new.familysearch.com.
